The Eastern White Cedar is native to this part of Ontario and therefore a very hardy and reliable option for hedging. Although the colour is not as bright and vibrant in the offseason, as an evergreen variety, they will remain full year round providing a solid wind and privacy screen. Most importantly, they won’t turn brown and die like so many of the other Pyramid and Emerald cedar varieties brought here from the west coast. As a hedge tree, they are meant to grow together, whereas most other cedar varieties sold in the nurseries are “dominant” trees that will never grow into a hedge….if they survive at all!
Although this variety is often nicknamed ‘Swamp Cedar’, our trees are grown on farms from seedlings. True swamp cedars are readily available on the side of any highway north of the GTA and they often make their way south with “fly by night” landscapers looking to profit with free or even stolen product. The problem for you the customer is that these trees will not do well once dug up and transplanted. This is due to the fact that they are usually growing like weeds with several trees spouting off of one fallen cedar (often in swampy areas). Since they are sharing a root system, the individual tree is damaged when these roots are cut. It is the same variety of cedar tree that we sell, but since ours are grown individually from a seedling, the roots are not compromised when transplanting. Much of our business has been replacing these swamp cedars or the ornamental Pyramid and Emerald varieties so popular at local nurseries.
We don’t keep any stock on hand, all trees are dug fresh to order and then delivered. If you are outside of our normal delivery area, there will be a delivery charge....or you can wait until we're offering a special free delivery day to your area (see below for delivery dates).
We normally only sell the 5-6 footers. Taller 7-9 footers can be dug but they tend to look more sparse since they have been left to grow longer in natural conditions, without regular watering, fertilizer or pruning. Also, the bigger the tree, the more risky it is to transpant.

Planting Services (minimum 15" spacing required for our auger)
Save your back and stay clean! Book us to plant for you for $10 per tree. Please Note: this is for planting only and does not include any garden sculpting, soil removal, staking or mulch.
Please Note: If you think it would be wise to replace your existing soil, have some triple mix or other soil on hand and we will happily use it when we plant for you. However, your existing soil cannot be taken off site with us....it will have to be left just in behind the hedge row.
Using the Calculator on the home page, figure out how many trees you will need. The most common spacing is 18" apart.
Planting services are available for $10 per tree as long as the spacing is at least 15" apart. Any closer and you are on your own since we can no longer use our auger to dig the holes.
If you are planting yourself, and want to pre-dig the holes.... they only need to be 10-12” across and 5-6” deep for the 5-6 footers.
Please give us a delivery location so that we can confirm that there will be no extra charge for this service.
The minimum order size for free delivery is 10 trees.
Once a quote is sent, you can then confirm the order with a phone number and an exact address for delivery. Once you provide your phone number and address, the order is considered confirmed and arrangements will be made for your trees to be dug and delivered. This is where you might also consider ordering some soil for planting.
Please Note: ONCE AN ORDER IS CONFIRMED YOU ARE COMMITTED TO BUYING THE TREES SINCE THEY WILL BE DUG OUT OF THE GROUND AND IN NEED OF A NEW HOME.
Cedar Hedge Planting Tips (docx)
Download Water the trees after planting and continue to do so on a regular basis, with the goal of always keeping the soil moist. If you notice the soil cracking, you have not watered enough, and if the trees are sitting in a puddle all the time, you are watering too much - both will hurt the trees. Depending on the weather, 2-3 times per week should be enough for the first couple of months as the trees get established. Once they are well established, they will likely survive without watering, but they will thrive if you continue to keep the soil moist. Major garden retailers sell moisture meters for this purpose. A soaker hose can help water the trees slowly so that it reaches the roots. Pay attention to unusually hot and dry conditions when they might need a little extra.
Mulch can be added as it will help keep down weeds, it retains moisture, and it adds a tidy, finished look to your landscape.
If the tree tips over after some wind, straighten it up and step down on the surrounding soil to re-anchor.
Do not use any fertilizer for the first couple of years. In the third or fourth season, if the trees are looking healthy, you can use a cedar fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Do not trim the hedge for the first year or two, until it is well established. After that, it can be trimmed once new growth appears and every few months into the fall. Simply clip off 1/3 to ½ of the new growth (the bright green leader at the tip of the tree). This will promote new growth and the thickening of the hedge. If you want to bring the hedge way down in height, you can trim off a lot more but it is best to do so gradually, and not all at once.
After transplanting, the trees will look a little stressed for a while, with some yellowing and possibly some browning of branches that were damaged during the transplant. Don’t panic! Unless they are totally brown, they will come back and began to flourish once they get through the transplant stress and establish new roots. Also, some brown foliage die-off is normal in late summer/fall. This will drop leaving a natural winter colour that is a duller green. A healthy cedar hedge will show new growth in the spring with a brighter green foliage.
Once well established, your new cedar trees will grow 1-1.5’ per year, even more in ideal conditions.
Good luck! Enjoy your new, beautiful, and natural privacy hedge.

These trees love the sun as long as they get enough water. However, they can also tolerate shade. They will do well anywhere as long as the soil stays moist. The only risk in planting with full sun exposure is allowing the soil and therefore the roots to dry up. Proper watering (keeping the soil moist) will ensure excellent results in any location.
12-18-24” spacing…depends how quick you want the privacy. 18” spacing is the most common. 15" spacing is the minimum required for us to plant for you due to the size of our auger bit.
They can be planted rootball to rootball for a real tight hedge with some instant privacy. However, the size of the rootballs will vary making it difficult to know exacting how many trees will fit together over a certain length. It might be best to order a few extra with a plan to use them elsewhere if they don’t fit.
The White Cedar is a hedge tree meant to grow together. Eventually they will grow several feet across, allowing them to touch at a distance of more than 24”, however they will not hedge together if they are planted too far apart. Large country properties without privacy concerns can get away with planting 3 or 4’ apart in order to save money but 24” is the maximum recommended spacing for most locations.
We deliver for free to the greater Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville and Milton areas on a minimum order of 10 trees. On select weekends, we deliver for free all over South Western Ontario, from the GTA north to cottage country and west to Windsor.

Ideally the hole should be dug just big enough for the rootball to fit. This will provide for maximum stability until the tree is established with a new root system. For the 5-6 footers, this would be approximately 10-12” across and 5-6” deep (a little less for the 3-4 footers) Never put any soil higher up the trunk than what is natural with the existing rootball.
Whenever possible it is best to dig individual holes rather than a trench, since this will provide for maximum stability until the tree is established with a new root system. Obviously when the trees are planted very close together, this might not be possible.
Although the white cedar will grow in most soil conditions, it never hurts to use a rich triple mix soil for best results. If we are planting for you, we will happily use a replacement soil that you supply as long as you have somewhere to dispose of the original soil. We do not recommend any fertilizers for the first year.
They will spend some time in shock after being transplanted and will look a little stressed for that first full season. After that, once established, they will grow 1-2’ per year, even more with ideal conditions and care.
They will grow as tall as you want them (over 50’ if you let them). Most people keep them trimmed to a desired hedge height.
After they are established and you can see the new growth as a brighter green colour, you can prune them. If you trim 1/3 to ½ of the new growth off of the top leader, they will grow thicker and fill in. Most people wait until they get some height before they do this and if you would prefer no maintenance at all, they will still grow together in a few years.
Yes, we provide our customers with a list of tree care tips including proper watering, pruning, and fertilization techniques.
Neither. They come with a rootball ie. a ball of dirt that stays with the roots as long as it stays moist and is not handled too roughly. This clump of soil keeps the tree alive and healthy until it is planted.
The sooner the trees are planted, the better, but as long as the rootballs stay moist and out of the hot sun, they can sit out of the ground for a few days before planting.
Our trees have not been prettied up as nursery stock with careful pruning and fertilizing. In fact, you can’t even find our trees in most nurseries since there is not enough profit margin for the nurseries and big box stores to stock them. This is why they are so affordable and in a couple of years you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference anyway.
Unfortunately this is not possible. We don’t keep any stock here…in fact your trees are still growing at a farm until an order is confirmed. When they arrive, some will look better than others, but they will all be healthy and ready for their new home. Once they grow together as a hedge, you won’t be able to tell one tree from the next.
Both spring and fall are great times to plant. Spring with cooler temperatures, moist soil and lots of rain helps the trees get established quickly. The shorter days and cooler temperatures of the fall also ensure that the ground stays damp and ideal for planting. Either end of summer means less water is needed to help them get established. Since conditions are less favourable from early July to late August, we typically shut down during that period. As long as a shovel can go into the ground before freeze up, they can be transplanted. Really late fall just before the ground freezes allows for the trees to get a full season in the following year without having to dig in the muddy conditions of early spring.
Emerald cedars are beautiful, dominant, ornamental trees. They are not hedge trees and will never grow together. A clump of three in the corner of a front yard or spaced several feet apart if front of a wooden fence can look great. However, if you plant them close together in a hedge formation, you will have a row of expensive trees, not a hedge. And because they are not suited for this growing region, every year that row will be dotted with golden brown ones that are supposed to be green.
Black Cedars look a little fuller but are actually just genetically modified White Cedars. They are also a lot more expensive and will not hedge together as well. Essentially, they are modified to look better in the nursery and on their own as an ornamental tree. For hedges, the White Cedar is the cheaper and better option.
We don’t offer a specific warranty with our trees….quite honestly we have never needed to in order to compete. If you do your research, you will find that this variety is extremely hardy and well suited for this area. We never hear from anyone after leaving except from the odd customer who wasn’t prepared for that period of shock after planting when the trees look a little stressed before they get established. It is possible in a large batch that one or two trees might not make it due to damaged roots. However, if the whole hedge is struggling, there is a problem with your soil or watering habits and we can’t control that. What we do guarantee is the delivery of fresh, healthy trees. With proper care, they will turn into a thick, lush green hedge.
A cedar hedge is a classic natural look that is used for privacy around some of the most expensive properties in Toronto. It is also a much cheaper option than a fence. As a natural, living wall, it can grow well beyond the 6’ height limit of a fence and provide beautiful privacy for years to come.
We do not recommend any fertilizer for the first year, only water. After that, you can use products such as Cedar Feeder to help promote growth but not when it is too hot and dry. Trunk fertilizers are best in the spring before a rain.
Mulch is an excellent addition to a cedar hedge for a number of reasons. In addition to looking good, it will retain moisture in the soil around the roots and it will keep down the weed growth while the cedar trees get established. Once the cedar trees are established, they will naturally prevent weeds by shading the ground and making the soil acidic.
After planting, the trees will be in shock for most of the season. This means that they will look a little stressed for a while before they look better. Some yellowing is normal and possibly some browning of branches that were damaged during the transplant. Don’t panic! Unless they are totally brown, they will come back and began to flourish once they get through the transplant stress and establish new roots. Also, some brown foliage die-off, especially on the tips is normal in late summer/fall. This will drop leaving a natural winter colour that is a duller green. A healthy cedar hedge will show new growth in the spring with a brighter green foliage.
